JAMES ARCHER FROM BEXLEYHEATH AND ERITH SCHOOL ART TEACHERS JAILED FOR SEX OFFENCES IN SOUTH-EAST LONDON
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, two art teachers from Erith comprehensive school in south-east London have been sentenced to prison for their involvement in sexual offences against male pupils.The incident, which came to light in July 1994, led to the conviction of Mervyn Douglas and James Archer, both of whom faced serious charges related to indecency and abuse.
At Woolwich Crown Court, the court proceedings revealed that Mervyn Douglas, aged 44, received a prison sentence of 21 months.
His colleague, James Archer, aged 36, was sentenced to nine months behind bars.
The court heard that the police had acted swiftly following a discovery made at Douglas’s residence.
His cleaner uncovered a collection of indecent photographs and a video, which served as crucial evidence in the case.
Archer, who had previously been a pupil at the same school, provided testimony for the prosecution during the trial, further implicating both men in the offences.
The allegations against the two teachers had been brewing since April 1993, when they were initially charged with indecency offences.
Both Douglas and Archer were suspended from their teaching positions at Erith School in Bexley, south London, as police investigations commenced.
The charges included indecent assault on a male, possession and taking of indecent photographs of a child, and gross indecency with a child.
Archer’s charges were particularly serious, reflecting the gravity of the offences committed against vulnerable pupils.
