MAN WHO SEXUALLY ASSAULTED A WOMAN IN A TOWN CENTRE BAR BEFORE ABUSING A POLICE OFFICER HAS BEEN JAILED
A man from Elgin who attacked a woman in a central town bar and later assaulted a police officer has been sentenced to prison after not fulfilling the community service requirement given as an alternative to jail.Steven Morice, aged 46 and a resident of Elgin, appeared again at Elgin Sheriff Court on Thursday, having made insufficient progress in completing the unpaid work order issued in July of the previous year.
Morice had previously confessed to sexually assaulting a woman at Dicey’s Bar on September 15, 2024, by inappropriately grabbing her on the buttocks over her clothing.
On the same date, on Elgin High Street, he also behaved in a threatening or abusive manner towards a police officer by acting aggressively, uttering threats and using a homophobic slur, calling the officer a “f*****g f****t”.
At a previous hearing in July 2025, Morice was placed under 12 months of supervision, ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work and placed on the sex offenders register as a direct alternative to custody.
The court heard he had since made very little progress towards completing the unpaid work requirement.
Morice had already been warned about his lack of engagement at a previous appearance, with defence solicitor Iain Maltman telling the court that the “consequences” of failing to comply had been explained to him.
Sheriff Olga Pasportnikov said Morice’s attitude had been “noted” before revoking the original order to sentence him anew.
She jailed Morice for 10 months and ordered that he remain on the sex offenders register.
