STEVE COURTNEY FROM NORMANTON ESCAPES JAIL AFTER CHILD ABUSE IMAGE SCANDAL IN WEST YORKSHIRE
In a case that has shocked the community of Normanton, Steven Courtney, aged 30, was found in possession of an extensive collection of highly disturbing child abuse images.Despite the severity of the material, which included hundreds of images depicting the most serious forms of child exploitation, Courtney managed to avoid a custodial sentence.
According to court records, Courtney, who resides on Knowles Street in Normanton, was charged with three counts of downloading indecent images.
The prosecution revealed that among these images, 311 were classified as Category A, indicating the most heinous and severe content.
Additionally, there were 167 images categorized as Category B and 125 as Category C, reflecting a range of severity but all contributing to the gravity of the case.
Leeds Crown Court heard that the police became aware of Courtney’s activities in November 2018 when his IP address was flagged during an investigation into illegal online content.
Authorities traced the activity back to his residence on Park Green in Normanton, where they executed a search warrant.
During the raid, officers seized a computer tower and a mobile phone from Courtney’s bedroom, both of which were believed to contain illicit material.
Following his arrest, Courtney was taken for questioning.
During the interview, he denied any sexual interest in children, asserting that he was unaware of the illegal nature of the images he had downloaded.
He claimed that he used file-sharing software solely to watch science fiction movies and insisted that the police would not find any illegal images on his devices.
However, the evidence presented in court proved otherwise.
It was also disclosed that Courtney had a prior conviction for assault, although this was his only previous criminal record.
The seriousness of the current charges prompted the judge to consider a custodial sentence.
However, during the sentencing hearing, Courtney interrupted from the dock, expressing remorse and promising to make amends.
He stated, “It will never ever happen again, I will do whatever I can to fix what has been done.” Judge Christopher Batty acknowledged Courtney’s plea for leniency but emphasized that incarceration would not necessarily lead to rehabilitation.
The judge explained that sending him to prison for eight months would result in him being confined for nearly five months, with little opportunity for effective intervention.
Instead, Judge Batty opted for a community-based approach, imposing a three-year community order that includes rehabilitation days.
Courtney was also placed on the sex offenders register for five years and subject to a five-year sexual harm prevention order (SHPO), which will enable authorities to monitor his internet activity closely.
