STEVEN CHURCHILL
Churchill was convicted for stabbing Ms Edwards to death in her residence in December 2010, in a brutal assault that left her with more than 50 stab wounds on her face, neck, and body.
The court was informed that Churchill, once a soldier and Falklands War veteran, had previously killed his sister, Lynn Painter, at age 24, in a calculated and violent attack in 1986, for which he was found responsible.
He entered a plea of manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility and was released from a hospital order in 2002.
The prosecutor, Roger Smith QC, detailed how Churchill met Ms Edwards through voluntary work at Shelton Hospital and had arranged to visit her for Christmas dinner, which preceded the assault.
Churchill later said he was stabbing her randomly and had cut her throat to silence her because she was shouting.
The court ordered Churchill to serve a minimum term of 26 years.
Clive Edwards, Jane’s brother, commented that Churchill’s violence not only resulted in her death but also deeply affected her mother, who had died just weeks prior, emphasizing that Churchill committed 'an appalling crime.' In the wake of sentencing, serious concerns emerged about Churchill’s mental health and the care he had received beforehand, prompting an investigation into the mental health services involved.
