STEVE AND KATIE GATES FROM SITTINGBOURNE SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO 15-YEAR-OLD CAT THUNDER

In a case that has shocked the local community of Sittingbourne, Kent, Steven J Gates and Katie Gates faced justice after admitting to causing unnecessary suffering to their elderly feline companion, Thunder. The 15-year-old cat was found in a dire state, suffering from a painful ulceration on his head that had gone untreated for an extended period.

Animal welfare authorities, acting on a public report about an injured black cat, responded to the Gates' residence in Sittingbourne. Upon arrival, RSPCA officers discovered Thunder in a critically neglected condition. The cat was barely able to stand, visibly suffering from severe malnutrition and neglect. His body condition was rated as one out of nine, indicating extreme emaciation, with his hips, ribs, and backbone prominently visible through his fur. The officers noted that Thunder's health had deteriorated to a point where immediate veterinary intervention was necessary.

Mrs Gates explained to the officers that her husband was in the process of bathing Thunder’s wounds and that they planned to contact a veterinarian later that evening. However, she also admitted that the couple lacked the financial resources to afford veterinary treatment, which contributed to the prolonged suffering of the animal. Despite their intentions, no medical help was sought in time, and Thunder’s condition worsened.

Tragically, Thunder’s injuries and overall health could not be salvaged. The veterinarian who examined him confirmed that the ulceration on his head was consistent with a chronic injury, likely caused by a cat bite. The vet also noted that issues with Thunder’s eyes and ears would have been noticeable to any attentive owner for at least a week prior to his death. Due to the severity of his injuries, infection, flea infestation, and the neglect he endured, Thunder was euthanized to prevent further suffering.

The Gates couple acknowledged their failure to seek proper veterinary care, which constitutes a breach of the Animal Welfare Act 2006. During the court proceedings, the RSPCA Deputy Chief Inspector emphasized the importance of responsible pet ownership, including timely medical intervention and proper care for animals in one’s possession.

As a result of their actions, Steven and Katie Gates were sentenced to 300 hours of unpaid community work. They were also ordered to pay each £200 in court costs, along with a £114 victim surcharge. Additionally, they are required to participate in rehabilitation activities aimed at promoting responsible pet ownership. The court imposed a ban on them keeping any animals for a period of 15 years, a restriction that will remain in effect until April 2040. This case serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with pet ownership and the consequences of neglect and cruelty.
