A 53-year-old man named Stephen Mooney has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife, Anna Mooney, in their home in Dublin in 2023.
Initially, Stephen Mooney pleaded not guilty to the killing of 43-year-old Anna Mooney on June 15, 2023.
However, during the trial, he changed his plea after Gardaí (Irish police) uncovered footage of the murder on a mobile phone, which they were able to access due to an updated software analysis allowing the device to be unlocked without a password.
The incriminating footage showed Mooney entering a room with the knife used to carry out the attack.
The murder took place in the kitchen and living room of their residence, and after committing the act, he called emergency services.
When authorities arrived, he was found leaning over his wife's body.
Mr Justice Paul McDermott imposed the mandatory life sentence, describing the murder as a devastating loss for Ms Mooney's family that caused significant trauma and damage.
The attack was carried out with a knife, and the case was considered a domestic homicide.
