MOTHER AND UNCLE SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS FOR CHILD ABUSE AND RAPE IN DUBLIN
A mother who sexually assaulted her four-year-old daughter and facilitated her brother (the child's uncle) to rape her has been sentenced to 15 years in prison each. The woman, in her 50s, was convicted by a Central Criminal Court jury last July after an 18-day trial of two charges of sexual assault between January and September 2001 and one charge of raping her daughter in March 2003.
The daughter, who was four at the time, testified that her mother watched while her uncle raped her in a bedroom.
Both the woman and her brother, aged in their 40s, maintain their innocence and do not accept the jury's verdict.
The judge described the crimes as "particularly cruel, egregious and depraved" and sentenced both offenders to 15 years, backdated to when they went into custody.
The victim's impact statement revealed she was left feeling like an outcast, diagnosed with PTSD, high anxiety, and depression.
The judge acknowledged her bravery in coming forward, emphasizing that "A young child should be nurtured and protected from danger," making this offending "remarkable in its depravity and cruelty." The woman was also described as having lived in a family environment marked by neglect and alcohol issues.
The court heard that the remaining children of the accused were taken into State care.
The sentencing reflects the gravity of the case, with the offenders receiving significant sentences due to their ongoing denial and absence of remorse.
