SWIM COACH JAILED FOR THREE YEARS FOR SPYING ON GIRLS AS THEY CHANGED

A swimming instructor based in Dublin has been sentenced to three years in prison after admitting to secretly filming young girls in a pool setting over the course of a year.

The coach, identified as Matthew Coward from Santry, Dublin, pleaded guilty to charges of child sexual exploitation and the production of child abuse material, covering the period from September 2021 to September 2022.

Coward, aged 32, served as a coach with Swim Ireland for nearly four years.

Presiding judge Orla Crowe highlighted his position of authority and control, noting the admiration children held for him.

The court sentenced him to four years behind bars, with an additional year suspended.

The misconduct was uncovered after one of the victim’s parents brought their concerns to light in February 2022, when Coward offered a special swimsuit to a young girl arriving at the pool early that morning.

The girl found his request to go into his office and remove her swimsuit strange, especially when he asked her to be naked for the process.

Inside the office, she discovered an iPad set up as a recording device, causing her distress.

The girl later confided in her father, prompting him to contact Swim Ireland’s safeguarding officer, Kate Hills.

This led to a police investigation, which revealed Coward had covertly recorded three girls changing in his office and was using multiple devices, including a mobile phone and an iPad, to film them.

He also arranged chairs to create a private area and was heard speaking with the girls about their swimsuits and purchases.

When confronted, Coward appeared shaken and confused about the allegations.

Authorities conducted surveillance and executed search warrants, discovering on his phones nearly 80 videos and images of children in compromising poses, alongside internet searches linked to teenage pornography.

He was stopped on his way home after running a red light, where more evidence was collected.

Victim impact statements revealed lasting trauma.

One girl expressed her fear and loss of trust, noting her difficulty in forming new relationships or trusting new coaches.

Another girl spoke of her diminished love for swimming and her feelings of betrayal by the coach she once saw as a paternal figure.

Both families are still affected by the incident.

Coward’s legal representative expressed remorse, mentioning his client’s low self-esteem and mental health struggles, including anxiety and depression.

The court acknowledged the breach of trust and the devastating impact on the victims, imposing sentences for each charge to run concurrently, resulting in a four-year term with the final year suspended.

Swim Ireland issued a statement expressing regret over the incident, praising the bravery of the children who came forward, and reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding and protecting young athletes.

They emphasised that the case underscores the importance of adhering to safeguarding policies to foster a safe environment where individuals feel secure in speaking out against inappropriate behaviour.
