STEPHEN KING FROM LEIGH CAUGHT IN UNDERCOVER PAEDOPHILE HUNT AT SWINTON B&M

In March 2021, a disturbing case unfolded involving Stephen King, a resident of Leigh, who became the subject of a serious criminal investigation after attempting to engage in illegal activities with a supposed underage boy.

The incident was part of a broader operation conducted by law enforcement and a paedophile hunting group, which aimed to catch individuals seeking to exploit minors online.

King had been actively communicating through a swingers website, believing he was interacting with a 14-year-old boy named Oliver Smith.

Over a series of messages, he sent explicit content and photographs of himself, clearly indicating his intentions.

During these exchanges, King was told that Oliver was only 14 years old.

In response, he asked the boy to keep his age a secret, fearing he might be expelled from the website if his true intentions were discovered.

This conversation was part of a pattern of grooming behavior that alarmed investigators.

The account used by King was not genuine; it was created by Timothy Allcock, a member of the paedophile hunting group known as Elusive Child Protection.

The group had initially contacted the decoy profile on August 4, 2019, and King continued to communicate with the fake profile via the Kik messaging app.

During these exchanges, King made increasingly explicit requests, including asking to see photos of the supposed 14-year-old in the shower.

When Oliver mentioned he was with a 12-year-old friend, King inquired whether the friend was also on the swinger site, and he made a disturbing comment about the naughtiness of involving a 14-year-old.

By August 6, 2019, King had expressed a desire to meet the young decoy in person.

The paedophile hunters arranged a sting operation, pinpointing his location in the car park of a B&M store off Station Road, Swinton.

When the group arrived to confront him, King was in a van, which he quickly reversed and drove away upon seeing them.

Law enforcement and the group then used online information to locate his home address.

They found King sitting in his van with his mother in the passenger seat.

The group detained him until police arrived to arrest him.

Further searches of King’s phone, which was seized at the scene, revealed online searches for terms such as 'Snapchat teen girl' and explicit content involving Snapchat.

These searches underscored the disturbing nature of his online activity.

During the court proceedings at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court, His Honour Judge Alan Conrad QC addressed the case.

He noted that because the minor involved was a fictitious profile, the severity of the offense was somewhat mitigated, as no real harm was caused to a child.

The judge also acknowledged that King had a history of good character and believed there was a genuine potential for rehabilitation.

Judge Conrad explained, “These are serious matters,” emphasizing the gravity of the attempted grooming and solicitation.

King was charged with attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming and attempting to induce a child to view sexual images.

Considering his guilty plea and the elapsed time since the incident, the judge sentenced King to a 12-month prison term, suspended for two years.

Additionally, he was subjected to a four-month electronically monitored curfew, requiring him to remain at home from 8 pm to 6 am.

The court also imposed a 10-year sexually harm prevention order, mandated attendance at rehabilitation programs, and ordered him to register as a sex offender for the next decade.
