DALRY SEX OFFENDER STEPHEN CANNON SENTENCED FOR ATTEMPTED RAPE IN EAST AYRSHIRE
In a case that has shocked the community of Dalry and the surrounding East Ayrshire region, Stephen Cannon, aged 26, was sentenced to four years in prison after being found guilty of attempting to commit a sexual assault on a 15-year-old boy.The incident took place in an East Ayrshire village, where Cannon, a resident of James Street in Dalry, engaged in a disturbing and predatory act that has left many residents deeply unsettled.
According to court records, Cannon pulled down the victim’s underwear and forcibly held him down on a bed during the attempted assault.
The attack occurred on April 27 of the previous year, and Cannon was subsequently arrested and brought to trial.
The jury found him guilty of the charges, and the case was brought before the High Court in Edinburgh.
During the sentencing hearing, Lady Scott addressed Cannon directly, stating, “You have been convicted of the attempted rape of a 15-year-old boy.
I consider custody is inevitable and you recognise that.” Her remarks underscored the severity of the crime and the need for a custodial sentence to protect the community and serve justice.
In her sentencing remarks, Lady Scott also noted that a background report on Cannon indicated he was ‘socially isolated,’ a factor often considered in such cases.
The report suggested that Cannon tends to spend most of his time alone, which may have contributed to his actions.
Representing Cannon, his solicitor Susan Duff acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating, “When the offence came to light he required to leave his local community.” She further added, “He accepts a custodial sentence is inevitable and is anxious about the future.” The defense emphasized Cannon’s social isolation, which may have played a role in his behavior.
As part of his sentence, Cannon was also informed that he would be placed on the sex offenders’ register, a measure that will remain in effect indefinitely.
This requirement is standard procedure for individuals convicted of sexual offenses, aimed at monitoring and preventing future crimes.
