STEPHEN BROWN SHAMES GLASGOW IN HORRIFIC ASSAULT NEAR HILLHEAD LIBRARY

On July 25, in the bustling West End of Glasgow, a disturbing incident unfolded involving Stephen Brown, whose actions have shocked the local community and drawn the attention of law enforcement authorities. The victim, a woman attempting to travel from the West End to the Darnley neighbourhood, encountered Brown near the Hillhead Library on Byres Road. Initially, she appeared visibly upset, possibly distressed by her circumstances or the encounter itself.

In a troubling turn of events, Brown offered her £10, an act that seemed to momentarily placate her distress. The situation escalated later that day when the two engaged in consensual sexual activity, according to the victim’s account. However, her recollection of the events was marred by the influence of Valium pills she had taken earlier, which impaired her memory and responsiveness.

Prosecutor David Dickson outlined to the Glasgow High Court that the woman’s last clear memory was at approximately 9:16 p.m., when she was lying on her back. Witnesses later reported seeing two individuals carrying trash into Ashton Lane, a street adjacent to the library, and observed Brown on top of her. The woman was found to be nude from the waist down, and it was believed that she had passed away at that moment. Emergency services were promptly called by witnesses who feared the worst.

When police arrived at the scene, they found the woman lying motionless, while Brown was still present and harassing her. The officers quickly intervened, ordering Brown to leave the victim alone. Despite his protests, Brown was detained by the police, who reported that he attempted to justify his actions by saying, “Let me pull up my trousers – we were just having a bit of fun.”

The woman was transported to a hospital for urgent medical attention, as she was unresponsive and in a critical state. It was only the following morning that she regained consciousness. The severity of her condition and the circumstances of the assault led to Brown’s arrest and subsequent charges.

Today, Stephen Brown pleaded guilty to the charge of rape. His defence attorney, Allan MacLeod, argued that Brown’s memory of the incident was “incomplete,” citing his intoxication at the time. MacLeod emphasized that Brown’s guilty plea was based on statements from other witnesses, who confirmed that the woman was unresponsive during the assault, despite Brown’s own lack of memory of the event.

MacLeod further noted that police officers found Brown still on top of the woman when they arrived at the scene. The case was scheduled for sentencing on July 1 in Edinburgh, but Brown remains in custody on remand until then, as the court considers the appropriate punishment for his actions.
