SONNY ROGERS SENTENCED FOR HARASSMENT AND HATEFUL THREATS IN GLOUCESTERSHIRE

A man from Cheltenham, identified as Sonny Rogers, has been sentenced to two years and four months in prison after subjecting his female probation officer to a series of extremely disturbing and threatening messages.

The incidents took place in Gloucestershire, and the case was brought before Gloucester Crown Court, where a serious pattern of abuse was revealed.

On the morning of August 10 last year, the probation officer, who has served the sector for fourteen years and described herself as having never experienced such extreme harassment before, discovered numerous text messages and two voice mails from Rogers.

These communications contained highly graphic and threatening content directed at her, causing significant distress and fear.

Prosecutor Lucie Stoker detailed to the court that the voicemail messages were especially vivid and included explicit threats of sexual violence and other extreme acts of cruelty.

Among the alarming threats, Rogers spoke of female genital mutilation, telling the officer to 'get ready for nine inches of a prime 20-year-old manhood.' He also issued threats of terrorism and expressed intent to carry out acts of sexual violence, including claims that he would cut her womb and ovaries out and physically assault her until her face was bruised and blackened.

His messages further descended into disturbing references about her childhood, suggesting that she was subjected to sexual abuse when she was a girl, and he expressed a desire to engage in sexual acts with her as if she were a young child.

Throughout the exchange, Rogers did not refrain from using racist language, repeatedly employing the N-word towards the woman.

He also threatened to throw battery acid over her.

These messages culminated in a recorded seven-minute phone call during which Rogers vented his thoughts in a continuous and unrelenting manner.

The tone and delivery of this call left a profound impression on the court, highlighting the dangerous intensity of his threats.

The court also heard about Rogers’s criminal history, which includes prior imprisonment for accessing child and extreme pornography.

At the time of the harassment, Rogers was on license, obligated to maintain contact with his probation supervisor.

His behavior towards this officer was unprecedented in her career, leaving her feeling uneasy about future home visits and significantly affecting her sense of safety in her role.

During the proceedings, Rogers’s defense solicitor, Joe Maloney, portrayed him as a man with a dual personality, describing him as both pleasant and personable in other contexts and noting he had written to express remorse for his actions.

Maloney argued that Rogers was willing to accept a custodial sentence but expressed frustration that probation services had not adequately supported him in addressing his sexual issues.

Judge Ian Lawrie QC was unequivocal in his condemnation.

He remarked that mere apologies are insufficient in light of the grave nature of Rogers’s actions.

The judge emphasized that Rogers’s behavior was deeply appalling and unacceptable, especially considering he was attempting to threaten someone trying to assist him.

The judge pointed out the irrational, offensive, and persistent nature of the threats, which inflicted considerable fear and harm on his victim.

In his sentencing, Judge Lawrie stated that the offences demonstrated irrational and alarming behavior that necessitated a custodial response.

He underscored the extent of the threats and the psychological damage caused, describing Rogers as dangerous given the severity and persistence of his actions.

Consequently, Sonny Rogers was sentenced to a period of two years and four months in prison.

In addition to the custodial term, the court imposed an indefinite restraining order prohibiting him from contacting the victim, and he was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of 190 pounds.

This case underscores the seriousness with which Gloucestershire courts treat threats and harassment, especially when linked to extremist and hateful content.
