WEMBLEY SOCIAL WORKER SOIFAR RAHMAN JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IN TOWER HAMLETS
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Soifar Rahman, a social worker based in Wembley, was sentenced to a total of eight years in prison for a series of heinous acts of child abuse and sexual misconduct. The crimes took place during a visit to a family’s home in Tower Hamlets in 1997, where Rahman exploited his position of trust to commit these egregious acts.According to court proceedings, Rahman, then aged 44, subjected a 10-year-old girl and her vulnerable mother to a series of sexual assaults. The court heard that during the visit, Rahman falsely claimed he was inspecting the girl for bruises. Instead, he forced her to strip naked, an act described as a “gross and blatant” breach of trust. The same incident also involved Rahman groping the mother’s private parts and breasts, further demonstrating his predatory behavior.
Following a trial last month, Rahman was convicted on seven counts of indecent assault. The judge, Simon Freeland, delivered a stern sentence, condemning Rahman for abusing his professional role for personal sexual gratification. The judge emphasized that Rahman exploited his position as a social worker, knowing the mother was in a vulnerable state and aware that she had a violent husband. The court described the abuse as a “gross and blatant breach of trust,” highlighting the severity and multiple aggravating factors involved.
It was revealed during sentencing that Rahman had a prior conviction for a similar assault on a client in 1996, which resulted in an 18-month prison sentence. This history underscored a pattern of predatory behavior. At the time of the latest crimes, Rahman was already 61 years old and suffering from serious health issues, including kidney failure that left him on dialysis, which the court noted limited his life expectancy to approximately seven years.
During the sentencing, Rahman appeared emotional, dabbing at his eyes with a tissue as he was led away to serve his sentence. The daughter, who was the victim in the case, sat silently in the courtroom’s public gallery, her expression somber as her abuser was sentenced. Rahman was handed four years and six months for sexually abusing the daughter, with three counts of abuse served consecutively, and an additional three-and-a-half years for abusing the mother.
Rahman denied all seven counts of indecent assault during the trial, maintaining his innocence. Nonetheless, the court’s verdict and sentencing reflect the gravity of his crimes and the betrayal of trust by a man entrusted with the care of vulnerable individuals in the community.
