SUSSEX DOCTOR JAILED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE
A hospital doctor who indecently assaulted teenage boys he met at work has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.Sivaguru Narendran, aged 78, of Hailsham, was convicted at Lewes Crown Court of 14 sex attacks committed during the 1980s and 1990s.
All victims encountered him while he was employed at The Horder Centre in Crowborough and Eastbourne District General Hospital in Sussex.
Despite safeguarding procedures claimed to be in place by Horder Healthcare, Narendran, also known as Dr John Narendran, exploited his position of trust to prey on vulnerable young men.
During sentencing, he was also issued a lifetime sexual harm prevention order.
The jury found him guilty last Thursday.
Detective Constable Tina Baptista commented: 'These men have bravely come forward to report the abuse they had suffered at the hands of a man who they should have been able to trust.' The case has prompted responses from NHS and healthcare authorities emphasizing tightened safeguarding measures and condemning his conduct as 'professionally and morally abhorrent.' A spokesperson for East Sussex Healthcare NHS expressed their sympathy for the victims and confirmed that checks on locum doctors are now significantly more rigorous.
Meanwhile, Horder Healthcare highlighted that their organization has evolved since the 1990s, implementing additional safeguards and mechanisms to ensure patient well-being and safety, stressing that any concerns are taken very seriously.
