KEIGHLEY CARE WORKER JAILED FOR ELDER ABUSE
Two ex-care workers, including 23-year-old Simran Asif, have been imprisoned after admitting to mistreating vulnerable dementia patients at Wingfield Nursing Home in Bingley.Asif was sentenced to nearly a year behind bars after evidence showed she punched an 80-year-old man, leaving him with a black eye.
Along with her colleague, 24-year-old Ridha Kazmi, Asif initially lied, claiming the elder had punched himself.
She also threw a tissue box at a 91-year-old man who was sleeping, which caused a large injury to his head; it was noted that the man was suffering from skin cancer and cried out in pain.
Kazmi, who pleaded guilty, received a two-month prison term for abusing another resident.
Although Asif was dismissed from her job in January 2023, she later sent videos displaying Kazmi’s further abusive acts, such as pouring water into a woman’s pyjamas and mocking her, as well as kicking and throwing objects at residents.
The court was told that the victims, all of whom were mistreated in 2022 and have since passed away, left their families devastated, illustrating the emotional trauma caused.
The judge highlighted the disturbing nature of some actions, stressing that residents required gentle, continuous care due to their vulnerabilities.
