WESTCLIFF-ON-SEA MAN JAILED FOR MURDER OF STEPDAUGHTER
Simon Meecham, 43 years old, was convicted of the brutal killing of his stepdaughter Leanne Meecham, age 26, at her house in Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex. The jury found him guilty of stabbing her in February, an act prosecutors described as a deliberately planned, focused, and entirely unprovoked assault on a vulnerable victim, which led to her death.
Meecham argued that he had injured her by accident, unaware that he was holding a knife, but this defense was rejected by the court.
Judge Charles Gratwicke sentenced him to life in prison, with a minimum of 22 years before release.
The judge characterized Meecham as a jealous and aggressive man whose violent actions resulted in the death of an innocent and loving young woman at the height of her life.
Evidence presented during the trial suggested that Meecham’s motives stemmed from jealousy and anger related to his previous marriage to Leanne’s mother and her new relationship.
The post-mortem indicated that Leanne had suffered brain damage caused by lack of oxygen after a stab wound to her windpipe.
Police records showed prior interactions with Meecham, including reports of disturbances at her home and a January arrest for assault, which led to their separation.
The family issued a statement asserting that they believe no prison sentence could adequately compensate for losing Leanne.
