SIMON JOHANSON-GRIFFITHS FROM ELLESMERE PORT SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO FRENCH BULLDOG IN LATEST CASE IN THE NORTHWEST

A man from Ellesmere Port, Simon Johanson-Griffiths, has been found guilty of severe animal cruelty after a tragic incident involving his pet French Bulldog, Athena. The case drew significant attention from animal welfare authorities and the local community, highlighting ongoing concerns about animal abuse in the region.

According to court records and evidence presented during the trial, Johanson-Griffiths was responsible for inflicting repeated suffering upon Athena, which ultimately led to her death. The incident occurred in his flat, and the case was brought to light following a police response to distressing noises emanating from his residence. On May 31 of the previous year, police officers responded to reports of loud banging, shouting, and the distressed yelping of a dog, which prompted an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the animal’s condition.

Initially, Johanson-Griffiths claimed that Athena had choked on her own vomit and died as a result. However, subsequent forensic examinations and veterinary assessments painted a different picture. The post-mortem report revealed that Athena suffered from Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome and tracheal hypoplasia, conditions that made her particularly vulnerable to respiratory failure. The veterinarian concluded that her injuries, combined with her pre-existing health issues and trauma to her head, were likely the cause of her death. The findings indicated that her suffering was prolonged and inflicted by Johanson-Griffiths’ actions.

Further complicating the case were inconsistencies in Johanson-Griffiths’ statements during police interviews. His explanations conflicted with witness testimonies from neighbors and others who had observed signs of abuse. These testimonies, along with the medical evidence, led to his conviction under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 for causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

In addition to his prison sentence, which was suspended for two years, Johanson-Griffiths was handed an indefinite ban from keeping any animals. The court also ordered him to complete 30 days of Rehabilitation Activity Requirement, emphasizing the seriousness of the offense and the importance of preventing future cruelty. This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing issues surrounding animal welfare in Ellesmere Port and the broader northwest region, prompting calls for increased vigilance and stricter enforcement of animal protection laws.
