SIMON FLANNERY FROM NEWTOWNABBEY FACES CHILD SEX ABUSE CHARGES IN BELFAST COURT
Simon Flannery, a 41-year-old man with a notable background in gymnastics coaching, has been formally charged with serious offenses involving child exploitation.Flannery, who previously earned the title of ‘Trampoline Coach of the Year’ from Gymnastics NI in 2019, is now at the center of a criminal investigation concerning the production, possession, and distribution of indecent images of children.
His arrest took place on November 29, 2023, carried out by officers from the PSNI Public Protection Branch.
Since that date, Flannery has been on police bail as authorities continue their investigation.
The charges against him include three counts related to the creation, possession, and dissemination of indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of minors.
These allegations are currently under review by the Public Prosecution Service, which will determine whether to proceed to trial.
Flannery is scheduled to appear before Belfast Magistrates Court on May 23, 2025, to face the charges.
A PSNI spokesperson confirmed the details, stating: “A 41-year-old man has been charged with distributing indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of children, making such images, and possessing an indecent image of a child.” Originally from County Mayo, Flannery has been residing in south Belfast for several years.
Prior to his arrest, he was known for training some of Northern Ireland’s most talented gymnasts, including top-tier athletes.
His involvement in the gymnastics community was significant, especially given his role at the Flight Gymnastics Academy in Newtownabbey, which is recognized as Northern Ireland’s largest trampoline club.
As the case moves forward, Flannery’s court appearance in Belfast will be closely watched, given the serious nature of the allegations and the impact on the community and the victims involved.
