SIMON COLBURN FROM CALDICOT AND WESTON-SUPER-MARE ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE CHILD ABUSE IMAGE CHARGES

In a disturbing case that has shocked the communities of Caldicot and Weston-super-Mare, Simon Colburn, a 50-year-old man, was found to possess an extensive collection of child abuse images, yet he narrowly avoided imprisonment. The case came to light after police received a tip-off in November 2015, prompting an investigation into the possession and distribution of illicit material involving minors.

During the police interview, Colburn made a chilling statement, claiming, “you stop being a child at 12,” revealing his disturbing views on childhood and innocence. His comments, along with the evidence collected, painted a troubling picture of his mindset. The authorities conducted a thorough search of his residence in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, where they uncovered a vast trove of illegal images stored on his computers.

Among the thousands of images seized, investigators identified approximately 1,300 that were classified as the most serious, indicating the severity of the material he possessed. Additionally, there were four images categorized as “extreme,” involving animals in sexual contexts, which are considered particularly heinous. The sheer volume of illicit content found in his possession underscored the gravity of the case.

In his interview with law enforcement, Colburn openly expressed his belief that childhood ends at the age of 12, a statement that further highlighted his disturbing perspective. Despite the overwhelming evidence, he initially denied involvement in any child abuse image offences. However, he changed his plea to guilty just one day before his trial was scheduled to commence.

Although authorities discovered more than 4,200 indecent images in his possession, Colburn was not sentenced to prison. Instead, on Friday, 27 January, at Bristol Crown Court, he received a nine-month suspended sentence, meaning he will not serve time unless he commits another offence within the suspension period. The court also imposed several additional measures, including a 50-day rehabilitation requirement, a 10-year registration on the sex offenders register, and a sexual harm prevention order valid for ten years.

Since his arrest, Colburn has relocated from Somerset to Caldicot, Monmouthshire, but his legal obligations and restrictions remain in place. His case continues to serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against online child exploitation and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to protect vulnerable victims.
