MAN GIVEN LIFE SENTENCE FOR RAPING AND ABUSING VULNERABLE TEENAGE GIRLS
A sex offender has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Jersey's Royal Court.Shay John Edward Bester, aged 50, was convicted of multiple charges related to the assault and rape of three young women, all of whom were considered vulnerable, with one being a minor at the time.
The court's ruling requires Bester to serve at least 15 years before becoming eligible for parole, with the judge emphasizing that this lengthy term is essential due to the ongoing threat he poses to society.
Bester is currently incarcerated for crimes including trafficking, rape, and additional offences committed against another individual, for which he was convicted earlier in 2023.
His crimes against the first victim began in 1994, when she was still a teenager, according to court records.
Authorities detailed how Bester systematically gained her trust, only to manipulate and dominate her, a method he repeated with his other victims.
He subjected these women to rape and assault, deliberately isolating them from their support systems.
The victims were especially susceptible due to their vulnerability, and Bester exerted control over them through drug and alcohol dependency.
All three have developed post-traumatic stress disorder, with statements shared in court describing experiences of flashbacks, anxiety, and difficulties in trusting others.
One survivor recounted how Bester exploited her vulnerability, stating: "I was scared … I had no contact with my family or education.
"I was all alone … he made me feel like he would protect me, almost like a parent figure.
"He took advantage of this." She also detailed the long-lasting effects of his abuse, admitting to ongoing trauma.
She described moving away from St.
Helier to avoid him, and feeling frightened in public, often seeing his face in strangers.
Despite knowing he cannot reach her now, she still feels under threat and struggles with guilt and blame, wishing Bester understood the damage he caused.
The victims came forward separately, but their cases were linked when Jersey Police identified similarities to Bester’s 2023 conviction.
