RAPIST WHO CARVED WOMAN WITH NEEDLE GETS NEARLY A DECADE IN JAIL
David Andrew Sullivan received his sentence today in the Royal Court following a jury trial held in January. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of 13 years and was issued an indefinite restraining order.
Sullivan’s arrest occurred in March 2021 after his victim made a self-referral to the Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC).
After four hours and 49 minutes of deliberation, the jury unanimously found Sullivan guilty of three counts of rape on 13 January.
During his trial, the victim testified that Sullivan once covered her face with a pillow, which made her feel "trapped." She also claimed that he inflicted injuries by “carving” her with a piercing needle, which Crown Advocate Simon Thomas explained was an act intended to “assert control” over her.
Additional disturbing behaviors included Sullivan watching her from a tree outside her residence and issuing threats against her family.
Medical examinations showed multiple injuries consistent with sexual assault.
Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Jo Le Maistre stated: “I hope this goes some way to reassure the public that we are committed to investigating and prosecuting all sexual violence perpetrators.
The victim in this case has shown an immense amount of courage and patience during this process.
“Reporting a rape can be a terrifying experience.
We need to do all we can to limit the trauma as much as possible and put victims at the heart of our police response.
We are determined to ensure that victims who want to engage in the criminal justice process feel able to do so and are supported at every step.
“Additional support was also provided in this case by the Jersey Domestic Abuse Service.”
