EXETER TEEN VICTIMIZES PREDATOR IN COURT TO PROTECT OTHERS
An Exeter man named Shaun Forsyth, aged 43, was involved in a disturbing case of sexual grooming and communication with a minor.Over a period of three months, Forsyth engaged in sending hundreds of sexually explicit messages to a girl who was only 14 years old, cultivating a secret 'relationship' that he insisted must remain hidden.
His manipulative behavior included daily messaging — even during school hours — and he attempted to emotionally isolate the girl from her family, making her feel dependent on him.
Forsyth's interactions revealed his clear intentions to have sex with her, with messages implying such desires and referring to her as 'hot' and as a 'Princess,' while calling himself 'Daddy.' He employed various tactics to maintain secrecy, such as requesting message deletions and using disappearing messages, and would manipulate her by claiming that her father would harm him if he discovered the communications.
The girl, overwhelmed and emotionally dependent, started to self-harm and contemplated suicide.
Her parents noticed her withdrawal and behavioral changes, but initially couldn't understand the cause.
She eventually confided in a family friend, leading to police involvement.
Forsyth was convicted at Exeter Crown Court on December 4 for sexual communication with a child, pleading guilty.
He was sentenced to a six-month suspended sentence, required to perform rehabilitation, and attend unpaid work.
He was also placed on the sex offender register for seven years and given a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for five years.
The case highlighted systemic issues, including delays in the justice process and lack of mental health support, with the girl fighting long waits for counselling services.
Despite the trauma, she expressed pride for her bravery in coming forward and hopes to warn others about such predators.
The girl’s family acknowledged the emotional toll of the ordeal but remain proud of her courage to protect others.
