WALLSEND WOMAN JAILED FOR NEGLECTING ELDERLY DOG TO SUFFERING
In this case, Sharon Sarin from Wallsend, North Tyneside, was found to have neglected her dog, Star, an elderly West Highland terrier.The dog was suffering from severe health issues including fur loss across most of her body, ear and eye infections, dental disease, overgrown nails, and poor muscle control.
Sarin admitted that she had owned Star for about ten years and had not sought veterinary care for her since 2015, with the dog being in this neglected condition for several years.
On December 11, 2024, RSPCA Inspector Rowena Proctor visited Sarin’s home following a welfare concern report and confirmed the dog's suffering.
The inspection revealed an almost hairless dog smelling strongly of infection, with overgrown nails, gunky eyes, and signs of long-term untreated health problems.
The vet examined Star and found she had multiple issues, including infections, poor mobility, and a poor quality of life.
Due to the bleak prognosis and ongoing suffering, the vet recommended that Star be euthanized, which Sarin agreed to.
She pleaded guilty to an animal welfare offense under the Animal Welfare Act.
On June 27, 2025, Sarin was sentenced to a 12-month community order, 15 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days, and 100 hours of unpaid work.
Additionally, she was banned from keeping animals for 15 years, with the possibility of appeal after 10 years, which will expire in June 2040.
Inspector Proctor expressed disappointment and emphasized the importance of timely veterinary intervention for animals.
The case highlights long-term neglect and animal suffering due to owner's failure to seek proper care.
