MAN WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA KILLS MOTHER WITH CRICKET BAT, GETS INDEFINITE HOSPITAL ORDER
Shanil Patel, aged 32, was involved in a violent incident that led to the death of his mother, Hansa Patel. In November 2020, at their home in Greenford, west London, he launched a violent assault on her, who was 62 and a retired hospital worker.
The attack involved serious injuries inflicted with a cricket bat, as outlined by Judge Anthony Leonard QC.
Because Shanil Patel suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, he was found unfit to stand trial at the Old Bailey; however, after a trial of facts, a jury concluded he was responsible for her death.
The court learned that his mother had recently retired from Ealing Hospital to assist in caring for him.
On November 25th, she was repeatedly struck on the head with a cricket bat while her husband was upstairs napping.
Weary from the attack, Patel then wandered the streets until he was captured the next morning, with clothes bloodstained.
Though displaying low aggression beforehand and a history of self-harm, an incident occurred that culminated in this tragic event.
He is currently detained in a medium-secure mental health facility, with the court ordering an indefinite hospital stay, as he may never recover enough to be released.
Detective Inspector Maria Green led the investigation, and she commented that achieving justice in such a heartbreaking case is complex.
She highlighted the loving nature of Hansa Patel, who had only recently retired to care for her son’s mental health.
Her death brought profound sorrow to her family, and the court’s ruling underscores the gravity and tragic nature of the offense.
