SHANE JAMES GIBBS SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON FOR BRUTAL CRIMES IN BRIGHTON
Shane James Gibbs, a 35-year-old man with a troubling history of predatory behavior, has been handed a life sentence following a series of heinous crimes committed in Brighton. The court heard that Gibbs, described by the judge as a "nomadic drug dealer who moved around hotels and Airbnb rentals in Brighton," engaged in a disturbing pattern of sexual violence against six women between October and December of 2023.During this period, Gibbs exploited substances such as drugs and alcohol to incapacitate his victims, rendering them unable to resist his advances or defend themselves. His actions included sexual assault and rape, with at least two of his victims being only 15 years old at the time of the attacks. The court was informed that Gibbs was HIV-positive and engaged in unprotected sex with these victims, which raised serious concerns about their health and prompted immediate HIV testing upon his arrest.
Evidence presented in court revealed that Gibbs recorded himself throwing money over two victims at the Mal Maison hotel, an act that underscored his manipulative and predatory behavior. Additionally, he subjected a former partner to a prolonged assault, during which she was strangled to the point of unconsciousness, illustrating the extreme violence involved in his crimes.
Gibbs faced a total of 15 charges, including rape, false imprisonment, and actual bodily harm. The severity of his offenses was underscored by Judge Christine Henson KC at Hove Crown Court, who emphasized the profound impact on the victims. Many victims reported waking up to find themselves undressed or partially dressed, indicating a clear lack of consent and the traumatic nature of the assaults.
The court's sentencing decision mandates that Gibbs serve a minimum of 18 years in prison, with the possibility of parole after that period. His actions have attracted significant media attention, highlighting the gravity of his crimes and the lasting harm inflicted upon his victims.
