SHANE CUNNINGHAM FROM FORFAR SENTENCED TO NEARLY SIX YEARS FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES IN BRECHIN AND MONTROSE

Shane Cunningham, aged 19 and residing on Esk Park Terrace in Brechin, has been sentenced to a substantial period of five years and ten months in detention at the High Court in Glasgow. The court's decision followed Cunningham’s guilty pleas to multiple serious sexual offences, which have shocked the local communities of Brechin and surrounding areas.

In December 2015, Cunningham was involved in a disturbing incident where he sexually assaulted a woman in Brechin. At the time, the victim was under the influence of alcohol, which may have impaired her ability to respond or seek help effectively. The following day, Cunningham made a visit to Montrose police station, where he reported that he had been attacked by a group of men on Montrose’s High Street. However, during subsequent investigations, it was revealed that Cunningham’s account was entirely fabricated. He was aware that his story was false, and his intention was to mislead the police.

The court heard that Cunningham’s deliberate deception was not only a misuse of police resources but also a hindrance to genuine law enforcement efforts. By making a false report, he temporarily diverted police attention away from real incidents, thereby reducing the availability of police services for the public.
