SHABIR CHOUDRY SHAMES HALIFAX IRISH FESTIVAL WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT ON TWO YOUNG GIRLS

In January 2007, a disturbing incident occurred during a lively Irish festival held at the historic Piece Hall in Halifax, where a man named Shabir Choudry, aged 41, was involved in a serious sexual misconduct case involving two young girls. The event unfolded on July 2, when Choudry approached the two girls, aged 12 and 15, and requested to have their photographs taken with him. What initially appeared to be a harmless request quickly turned into a distressing situation that would lead to criminal charges.

According to the prosecution, led by David McGonigal, Choudry's behavior during the photo session was inappropriate and invasive. The court was shown evidence of a photograph capturing Choudry with his left hand placed on the breast of the 15-year-old girl. In another image, he was seen with both hands on the breasts of the 12-year-old girl. These actions were clearly sexual in nature and caused significant distress to the victims.

Following the incident, a formal complaint was lodged, prompting Choudry's arrest. During police questioning, he denied any sexual intent behind his actions, claiming there was no malicious motive involved. However, the evidence presented in court painted a different picture, leading to his conviction.

Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC addressed the court, expressing his disapproval of Choudry's conduct. He stated, “He should have known better than to take advantage of two completely innocent young ladies, touching them outside their clothing, for whatever gratification. They have been very upset by this but I have to balance all the anger at such matters with a recognition that this is at the very bottom of the scale.”

As a result of his actions, Choudry was sentenced to six months in prison, though the sentence was suspended for 12 months. Additionally, he was ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid community service. The court also imposed a five-year ban on him working with children and mandated that he sign the Sex Offender Register for a period of 10 years, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct.

This case highlights the importance of safeguarding young individuals at public events and underscores the serious consequences faced by those who violate their trust and safety in such settings.
