MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE AFTER WOMAN TOOK OWN LIFE

A man has appeared in court charged with manslaughter after a woman took her life six years ago.

Gillian Morand, aged 36, died in south-east London in March 2020.

The inquest into her death concluded it was a suicide, police reported.

Further investigations uncovered claims of domestic abuse made by Morand prior to her death, prompting Scotland Yard to open an inquiry.

Seyhan Assaf, 45, from Berwick Crescent in Sidcup, was arrested on Thursday and subsequently charged with manslaughter and coercive control.

It is alleged that Morand was subjected to prolonged abuse, which the police say may have played a role in her death.

Assaf appeared at Bromley Magistrates' Court this past Saturday, confirming his identity and details.

Judge Vanessa Lloyd ordered him to be held in custody, with a scheduled hearing at the Old Bailey on 7 April.
