SERUPEPELI NIUBUSAGA SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AND RAPE IN SOUTH CERNEY
In a case that has garnered significant attention, Serupepeli Niubusaga, a 41-year-old man from South Cerney, has been handed a severe sentence following his conviction for sexual assault and rape. The incident took place on an army base, where Niubusaga, who was serving as Army Personnel, committed these heinous acts.Niubusaga was brought to trial at Bristol Crown Court, facing charges that included one count of sexual assault and one count of rape. The trial lasted for a week, during which the court heard detailed accounts of the events leading up to the assault. The court proceedings revealed that the victim was attending a barbecue at the South Cerney army regiment on the evening of Saturday, May 26, 2018. Niubusaga was also present at this social gathering.
According to the evidence presented, after the event, the woman returned to her home and discovered Niubusaga there. She recognized him from the earlier barbecue, which established a connection between the two. The court heard that the two sat together on a sofa and engaged in conversation. However, the situation took a dark turn when Niubusaga proceeded to sexually assault and rape her during this encounter.
On Monday, July 6, the jury reached a verdict after deliberating, with a majority of the members finding Niubusaga guilty. The verdict was delivered at 4:09 pm, and shortly thereafter, the court sentenced him to seven years in prison. Additionally, Niubusaga was ordered to be placed on the sex offenders register for life, reflecting the gravity of his crimes.
This case was a retrial, following a previous trial held on October 29 of the previous year, which resulted in a hung jury. The conviction and sentencing mark a significant development in the pursuit of justice for the victim and serve as a stark reminder of the serious consequences of such criminal behavior.
