PERVERT WHO HACKED WEBCAMS TO SPY ON WOMEN GETS 2-YEAR SENTENCE
A man with deviant intentions infiltrated the computer webcams of three women to secretly record them while they disrobed and engaged in sexual activity.Scott Cowley employed a malicious "Trojan" application named Imminent Monitor to monitor his unknowing victims over a span of two years.
His capture occurred when authorities executed a search warrant at his residence on Bedford Street, St Helens, on November 25 of the previous year, confiscating his laptop before apprehending him at his place of work in Kirkby.
Prosecutors revealed that Cowley's PayPal account was associated with his personal details, including his name and email address, which helped the Regional Cyber Crime Unit identify him.
Cowley admitted to purchasing the malware and installing it covertly on the victims’ devices, using Imminent Monitor along with his mobile phone to record images from the webcams.
He stated he did not understand his motivations for doing so.
During questioning, Cowley confessed to the spying but offered no further explanation.
He also acknowledged three charges of unauthorized computer access and voyeurism, discovering folders containing videos and images of the victims undressing, and one recording of sexual activity.
The court sentenced Cowley to two years imprisonment and mandated that he register as a sex offender and comply with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for ten years.
Detective Sergeant Steve Frame of NWROCU underlined that offenders utilizing sophisticated technology are not beyond the reach of law enforcement, reaffirming the police’s dedication to combating cybercrime.
