SCOTLAND'S BIGGEST CHILD PORNOGRAPHY RING: WEBBER, BOATH, SLAVEN, MILLIGAN, CAMPBELL, MURPHY SENTENCED IN EDINBURGH
In a significant crackdown on child exploitation, six men have been sentenced today for their roles in what authorities are calling Scotland's largest child pornography and abuse network. The group, which operated across various locations within Scotland, was dismantled following an extensive investigation that uncovered disturbing evidence of their involvement in the production, distribution, and conspiracy to commit child abuse. These individuals appeared before the High Court in Edinburgh, where they faced charges related to their participation in a heinous paedophile ring. The defendants included Ross Webber, aged 27, from North Berwick; Craig Boath, 24, from Dundee; Colin Slaven, 24, from Edinburgh; and John Milligan, 40, along with Neil Campbell, 46, and John Murphy, 44, both from Glasgow. Their sentences ranged from two years to a maximum of 17 years in prison, reflecting the severity of their crimes.
Two additional members of the network, Neil Strachan, aged 41, a known sex offender, and James Rennie, aged 38, a gay youth worker, are expected to face sentencing at a later date. They are charged with more serious offenses, including the abuse of a three-month-old infant, highlighting the disturbing extent of the group's criminal activities.
The investigation, dubbed Operation Algebra, was launched after authorities traced the group through their illicit online communications. Over a period of ten weeks, law enforcement agencies collected evidence, leading to the conviction of all eight men involved. During the operation, authorities seized nearly 125,000 indecent images, underscoring the scale of the group's activities and marking it as the most extensive child exploitation network uncovered in Scotland to date.
Webber, Boath, and Milligan were also convicted of conspiring to engage in the sexual abuse of children, alongside Strachan and Rennie. The sentences handed down reflect the gravity of their offenses. Milligan, a civil servant, received the longest sentence of 17 years behind bars. Boath, an insurance worker, was sentenced to nine years and nine months, while Webber, an IT worker, received an eight-year and nine-month term. All three were found guilty of plotting to sexually abuse minors, in addition to charges related to child pornography.
Colin Slaven, a bank teller, was sentenced to three years in prison, with an additional year added for contempt of court after he appeared intoxicated at the trial's conclusion. Neil Campbell, who managed a cake firm, was ordered to serve three years and four months. John Murphy, working as a receptionist at a sauna, received a two-year sentence. The sentences reflect the judicial system's response to the disturbing nature of their crimes and the ongoing efforts to combat child exploitation within Scotland.
