MAN WITH A HISTORY OF PHYSICALLY ASSAULTING HIS MOTHER JAILED AGAIN
A young man from Oxfordshire was described in court as having assaulted his mother by pushing her to the ground and mocking her.Samuel Whitmore, aged 22 and residing on Heather Close in Carterton, received a prison sentence at Oxford Crown Court on Thursday, April 2.
He pleaded guilty to two charges of assaulting police officers, one of assault by beating against his mother, and one of wounding his mother under section 20.
Prosecutor Sandra Beck explained that Whitmore was at the Grapes and Tomatoes pub in Carterton on May 16 of the previous year.
He was refused entry due to intoxication and was involved in a scuffle.
Once in police custody, he was placed in a van in handcuffs and initially calmed.
However, he suddenly became aggressive, verbally abusing officers, making threats of rape, and stating he would incapacitate them all.
He also assaulted his mother on July 11 by striking her in the face, pushed her to the ground on August 12, and spat at a police officer the following day.
Ms Beck mentioned that his mother has been quite fearful of him when he is intoxicated.
The court was told that Whitmore had been held in custody since August 14.
Bethan Chichester, mitigating described him as a vulnerable and troubled individual with a strained relationship with his mother, noting that there is a cycle of love and hate between them.
She highlighted his low cognitive abilities and his efforts to improve, including completing alcohol treatment programs while in custody, and expressed hope that he would be better prepared upon release.
Emphasising his desire for support over further imprisonment, she asked the court for leniency.
Judge Hassan Khan remarked on the troubling circumstances, noting that Whitmore’s mother has endured eight years of abuse, including his punching her in the face, causing a nosebleed, and violently pushing her into the road, all while he laughed and fled.
The judge expressed concern over her ongoing fear that he may harm her fatally, acknowledging a long history of abuse.
It was noted that Whitmore suffers from complex post-traumatic stress disorder, which contributes to his emotional outbursts and escalating behavior when drinking.
The judge stated that rehabilitation was unlikely in this case and sentenced him to 27 months in prison, with a six-month restraining order against his mother.
