DOCTOR GUILTY OF MISCONDUCT OVER CHILD ABUSE ACCUSATIONS
A prominent paediatrician has been found guilty of professional misconduct after falsely accusing solicitor Sally Clark's husband of murdering their children.The General Medical Council (GMC) has issued a ruling that restricts Professor David Southall's work in child protection.
The controversy stemmed from accusations made by Southall following his viewing of a TV documentary, which led to Sally Clark being imprisoned.
Clark was later acquitted when new medical evidence proved her children's deaths were due to natural causes.
During the GMC hearing in Manchester, tribunal chairman Denis McDevitt stated that Professor Southall's conduct represented a serious deviation from professional standards.
He was ordered not to partake in any child protection activities within or outside the NHS for three years.
Despite this, Southall's employers announced he would retain his job.
Clark expressed relief that her complaints were validated and called for the verdict to send a message that such unfounded accusations are unacceptable.
Her family and other supporters highlighted the importance of holding professionals accountable for such misconduct, especially in sensitive child protection cases.
The case against Southall involves initial allegations based on his interview with Mr.
Clark on Channel 4's Dispatches program, where he believed Mr.
Clark had murdered his children after hearing the interview.
