RYAN TILEY FROM TROWBRIDGE ESCAPES JAIL AFTER PREGNANCY OF 13-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN THE UK
In a case that has drawn significant attention in Trowbridge, a 20-year-old man named Ryan Tiley has been spared imprisonment after being convicted of engaging in sexual activity with a minor and causing her to become pregnant. The incident, which took place over the course of 2013 and was reported in 2014, highlights the serious legal and moral issues surrounding underage sexual activity and the responsibilities of adults in positions of trust.
Ryan Tiley, who was employed as an IT consultant at the Ministry of Defence (MoD), first met the girl through a mutual acquaintance in January 2013.
At the time, Tiley believed the girl to be 16 years old, a misconception that was later corrected.
The court heard that Tiley was unaware of her true age when they initially connected, which contributed to the complexity of the case.
Despite discovering that she was only 13, Tiley continued to see her, and their relationship progressed to the point where they engaged in sexual activity.
Prosecutor Tessa Hingston provided details during the hearing at Swindon Crown Court, explaining that the relationship between Tiley and the girl persisted through the early months of 2013.
Although Tiley initially cooled the relationship after learning her true age, it resumed shortly thereafter.
Within a few months, the pair was involved in sexual encounters, culminating in the girl becoming pregnant in the autumn of the following year.
The pregnancy was eventually reported to authorities by the midwifery service, prompting an investigation.
The girl, in a victim personal statement, expressed her regret, stating, “If I could rewind time I would never have had sex with Ryan.” Her words underscore the emotional and psychological toll of the incident.
Tiley, who resides on Cock Hill in Trowbridge, pleaded guilty to the charge of sexual activity with a child, acknowledging his wrongdoing.
During the court proceedings, Tiley’s defense attorney, Emily Evans, explained that the relationship began innocently through a mutual friend.
She revealed that Tiley only realized the girl’s true age in late April or May of 2013 after overhearing a conversation between her parents, which left him shocked.
Evans emphasized that Tiley had been employed at the MoD for nearly two years and described him as “a complete idiot” who made a grave mistake.
She stressed that he had accepted responsibility throughout the process.
Judge Tim Mousley QC delivered the verdict, opting for a community order rather than jail time.
Tiley was sentenced to an 18-month community order with supervision, required to pay a £60 victim surcharge, and mandated to register as a sex offender for five years.
The judge acknowledged that Tiley was 18 at the time of the incident and described him as “immature.” He also noted that there was no evidence of grooming or other aggravating factors, and he expressed confidence that Tiley posed no ongoing risk to other young girls.
The judge concluded by emphasizing the importance of accountability and the severity of the offense, while also recognizing the circumstances that led to the case’s outcome.
