LANCASHIRE MURDERER RYAN HERBERT TO BE RELEASED FROM PRISON
A murderer who killed Sophie Lancaster because she was dressed as a Goth is set to be released from prison.Ryan Herbert was sentenced to life imprisonment at age 16 in 2008 for the murder in a park in Bacup, Lancashire.
The Parole Board has decided that Herbert is now suitable for release on licence.
Reacting to this decision, Sylvia Lancaster, Sophie's mother, expressed her dissatisfaction, stating: "Once again we have a justice system that fails to deliver justice." She explained that the original sentence reflected the 'level of violence' her daughter faced during a 'feral' attack.
Herbert, along with an accomplice, assaulted Sophie as she tried to shield her partner, Robert Maltby, from attack.
Sophie Lancaster was beaten to death in Stubbylee Park, and she died 13 days after the incident.
Herbert admitted to both murder and assault causing grievous bodily harm with intent and was initially sentenced with a minimum term of 16 years and three months, which was later reduced to 15 and a half years.
His minimum tariff was further shortened to 14 and a half years in 2020, making him eligible for parole consideration two years later.
A High Court judge noted Herbert's 'exceptional progress' in prison as a reason for the tariff reduction.
The Parole Board's decision cited Herbert's significant behavioral improvements, including engaging in education to degree level and participating in rehabilitation programs.
Witnesses, including his probation officer, supported his release, citing his remorse, insight, and maturity.
Herbert will be subject to restrictions on his movements, residence, and contact.
Harris, who was convicted of Sophie's murder and admitted to attacking Maltby, was jailed for life with a minimum of 18 years.
The attack was described by the judge as 'feral' and 'savage and merciless'.
Ms Lancaster indicated her inability to understand the Parole Board's decision, highlighting the severity of the injuries inflicted and emphasizing that her daughter's injuries were so severe that paramedics could not determine her gender after the attack.
