NEWTON ABBOT VOLUNTEER JAILED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGES
A volunteer at a primary school in Newton Abbot named Ross Chesterton, aged 52, was found to possess nearly 2,000 child abuse images, many of which depicted children of primary school age.
According to Exeter Crown Court, many images stored on Chesterton's computer were in the most serious categories.
He claimed police that he was investigating internet pornography, but ultimately admitted to downloading the images for sexual gratification.
Chesterton was charged with four counts of making indecent images.
Police traced him after a tip-off from the National Crime Agency, and he was found with images stored on his computer's memory after browsing peer-to-peer sites.
Despite working at the primary school for one afternoon a week, there were no offences committed at the school.
The court sentenced him to a sex offenders' course, a ban from working with children, and imposed a ten-year sexual harm prevention order.
The judge described Chesterton as showing an 'unhealthy interest in indecent images of children' and noted a 'substantial number' of images in the most serious categories.
