PERVERT PENSIONER, 77, JAILED FOR SEXUALLY ASSAULTING WOMAN WHILE SHE SLEPT
A 77-year-old man has been sentenced to prison for a sexual assault incident.Depraved John Charlesworth exploited the victim after her inhibitions were lowered due to alcohol consumption, a court was told.
He initially denied the assault, claiming he was not responsible as the woman had passed out at his property, but he admitted guilt to the sexual assault charge during court proceedings.
Charlesworth, residing in Higher Sandygate, Newton Abbot, received a two-year custodial sentence at Exeter Crown Court.
Described as a man with a previously good reputation, Charlesworth expressed remorse and shame over his actions.
During sentencing, Judge David Evans stated: "The influence of alcohol made the victim susceptible to sexual assault.
She was unaware of what was happening and was helpless to prevent it." The incident occurred in 2022, the court was informed.
The woman recovered to find that Charlesworth had undressed her.
DNA evidence confirmed his involvement.
In her statement, the victim described the case as profoundly affecting her life and causing significant trauma.
The judge emphasized that the offense was too grave for a suspended sentence, noting that while prison at his age would be challenging, Charlesworth would be required to serve half of his sentence behind bars.
