RONALD LALLEY SENTENCED IN HEMEL HEMPSTEAD FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON TEENAGER

In May 2013, a disturbing case of sexual assault involving a teenage girl and a hospital technician came to light in Hemel Hempstead. The victim, a 16-year-old girl, was subjected to a distressing and traumatic experience at the hands of Ronald Lalley, a 53-year-old man who was found guilty of assaulting her during a night of heavy drinking.

The incident occurred in the week leading up to her GCSE examinations, a critical period for the young girl’s academic future. Lalley, who was under the influence of alcohol at the time, committed the assault on May 5th, with the court hearing that he twice placed his hands down the girl’s trousers. One of these assaults was described as particularly rough and painful, leaving the girl deeply affected both physically and emotionally.

Following the attack, the girl experienced severe emotional repercussions, including insomnia and depression. In a victim impact statement, she expressed her feelings of being 'extremely distressed and traumatised' by the ordeal, highlighting the lasting impact of Lalley's actions. The court was told that her mental health was significantly affected, and she continues to suffer from the trauma.

Prosecutor Simon Sterling detailed the case, emphasizing the gravity of the assault and the victim’s suffering. Lalley was charged with two counts of assaulting the girl by penetration, with the court hearing that Lalley claimed the girl had initiated the contact by grabbing his hand and pulling it down, an assertion that the court did not accept.

At the time of the offence, Lalley was employed as a hospital technician, having previously worked as a telecoms engineer. His residence was located on Kenilworth Close in Hemel Hempstead. The court proceedings revealed that Lalley’s actions were opportunistic, and he had no prior criminal record, according to his defense attorney, Francis McGrath.

However, Judge Marie Catterson did not accept Lalley's claims and condemned his behaviour. She described the incident as disgraceful, noting that Lalley had consumed an excessive amount of alcohol and failed to control himself. The judge emphasized the significant age difference, stating that Lalley, many years her senior, took advantage of a vulnerable young girl.

As a result, Lalley was sentenced to four years in prison. Additionally, the judge imposed a sexual protection order that prohibits him from being in any residence with females under the age of 16 for the next 12 years. Lalley is also required to register as a sex offender for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his conduct to protect potential future victims.
