GARRETT AND CLAIRE MILLER FROM HEMEL HEMPSTEAD SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO WEST HIGHLAND TERRIER DAISY

Garry John Miller, a company director born in December 1973, along with his wife Claire Miller (nee Shipman), whose age has not been disclosed, residing at Knights Orchard in Hemel Hempstead with the postcode HP1 3QA, have been found guilty of severe neglect and mistreatment of their pet West Highland terrier, named Daisy.

The couple faced legal consequences after pleading guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to their dog, which led to their disqualification from owning or keeping any dogs for a period of five years. This penalty is part of the court’s effort to emphasize the seriousness of animal cruelty cases and to prevent future neglect.

Daisy was discovered wandering in the Hemel Hempstead area on Friday, October 16, 2020. The dog was subsequently signed over to Dacorum Borough Council, which took responsibility for her care. An examination by a veterinarian revealed that Daisy was in a dire state of health. Her coat was described as greasy and heavily matted, with dried feces clinging to her fur, indicating neglect over an extended period.

The vet also noted that Daisy’s ears were infected, emitting a strong, foul-smelling discharge. Both of her eyes were affected by significant discharge, further highlighting her suffering. Additionally, she had an ingrown dew claw that had grown into her leg, resulting in an infected wound that required medical attention.

Local officials and animal welfare advocates responded strongly to the case. Cllr Julie Banks, who is the Portfolio Holder for Community and Regulatory Services, stated, “This case sends out a clear message about how seriously Dacorum Borough Council and the courts take the issue of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. It is never acceptable to neglect an animal, and I pay tribute to our Animal Welfare Team who have helped Daisy recover and find a new home for her.”

Rachel Smith, the Animal Welfare Officer from Dacorum Borough Council, expressed her concern and hope for Daisy’s future. She said, “Daisy was an older dog who deserved to be cared for in her twilight years. There is support available through local charities and rehoming centres, who can assist owners who may be suffering financially. Daisy’s suffering could easily have been avoided. Following her entry into Dacorum Borough Council’s care, she has made a full recovery and has now settled well into her new forever home.”

As part of their sentencing, Claire Miller was ordered to pay a fine of £120, along with a victim surcharge of £34 and costs amounting to £750. Garry Miller received a more substantial fine of £1,000, with a £100 victim surcharge and the same £750 in costs. Both individuals were disqualified from owning or keeping dogs for five years, a ban that will expire in May 2026.

This case underscores the ongoing commitment of local authorities and animal welfare organizations in Hemel Hempstead to combat animal cruelty and ensure that animals like Daisy receive the care and respect they deserve.
