RONALD BENNETT OF THAMESMEAD SENTENCED TO FOUR YEARS FOR CHILD ABUSE IN CROYDON
In June 2003, a disturbing case of child abuse culminated in the sentencing of Ronald Bennett, a 47-year-old man from Thamesmead, who was convicted of multiple sexual offenses against a nine-year-old girl.The proceedings took place at Croydon Crown Court, where Bennett received a four-year prison term after a series of heinous assaults on the young girl.
Ronald Bennett, who was unemployed at the time, had a troubling criminal history, with two prior convictions related to child abuse.
His latest victim, now aged 10, was subjected to a series of disturbing acts that left her family devastated.
The mother of the girl expressed her relief upon hearing the sentence, stating, “I am pleased.
The sentence could have been better but it’s good enough.
It was definitely worth going through with it all.” She also noted her satisfaction with the restrictions imposed on Bennett, which included lifetime bans on residing in any household with children and on caring for or supervising children, including his own.
During the trial, Bennett denied three counts of indecent assault and one count of gross indecency.
However, in April, he was convicted on all four charges.
The court heard that Bennett had exposed himself to the young girl and kissed her between the legs while they were watching television together.
Additionally, he showed her pornographic magazines and an adult sex video, actions that deeply traumatized the child.
Judge Cedric Joseph addressed Bennett directly, remarking, “It is said you have expressed remorse but it’s a great shame you didn’t show enough remorse to have pleaded guilty, thus avoiding the child having to give evidence.
I have no doubt you had this behaviour in mind right from the start.” The judge’s words underscored the severity of Bennett’s actions and the importance of justice for the young victim.
The case highlights the ongoing issues of child abuse and the necessity for strict legal consequences to protect vulnerable children in communities like Thamesmead and beyond.
