DAVID PHILLIPS FROM THAMESMEAD SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC ANIMAL NEGLECT AND STARVATION OF STAFFY AMBER
In a disturbing case of animal cruelty, David Phillips, a resident of Thamesmead, was found guilty of neglecting his pet dog, Amber, leading to her tragic death due to severe starvation. The incident drew significant attention from animal welfare authorities and the local community, highlighting the severity of neglect that can occur even in seemingly ordinary households.Amber, a nine-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier, was discovered in a deplorable state after her body was left at a Thamesmead veterinary hospital for disposal. An RSPCA inspector who responded to the case described the dog's condition as utterly shocking, noting that her emaciated body was so severely neglected that her breed and original coloration could not be identified. The investigation revealed that Amber had been suffering from chronic starvation, with her weight reduced to a mere 8 kilograms—almost half of her previous weight of 14 kilograms, recorded during a veterinary visit in 2019.
The post-mortem examination confirmed that Amber had died from prolonged starvation. Additionally, she was found to be suffering from a widespread, chronic skin disease caused by a mite infestation, which had gone untreated. The veterinarian who conducted the examination described Amber’s case as one of the worst they had encountered in their career, emphasizing the extent of her suffering.
David Phillips, the owner of Amber, pleaded guilty to two charges under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. The first charge was for causing unnecessary suffering by neglecting her basic needs, particularly her weight loss. The second was for failing to provide appropriate veterinary care for her chronic skin condition. During the court proceedings, the veterinary surgeon provided testimony that underscored the severity of Amber’s condition, describing it as a clear case of neglect.
RSPCA Inspector Harriet Daliday, who led the investigation, provided a detailed account of Amber’s condition in court. She stated, “Amber’s body was extremely thin, with all her ribs clearly visible, as were the bones in her head, shoulders, spine, and hips. Most of her fur was missing, especially on her legs and underside. Her claws were overgrown, and there was dried faecal matter over her rear end. I was unable to determine her original colour or even her breed due to her poor body and skin condition.”
Inspector Daliday expressed her distress over Amber’s suffering, saying, “It’s very upsetting to imagine the suffering Amber endured at the end of her life. She was so thin and in such a poor state.”
In sentencing, David Phillips was sentenced to 12 weeks in jail. He was also ordered to pay £690 in court costs and a victim surcharge of £128. Furthermore, he was disqualified from keeping any animals for life, a measure intended to prevent similar cases from occurring in the future. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the devastating consequences of neglecting animal welfare.
