ROGER WAKELY EXETER AND GAULBY SEX OFFENDER SENTENCED TO 13 YEARS FOR MULTIPLE SEXUAL ASSAULTS

A 73-year-old retired vicar named Roger Wakely has been handed down a prison sentence of 13 years after being found guilty of committing a series of 27 sexual assault offences. These offences spanned several decades, with some incidents reportedly occurring as far back as the 1960s and 1970s. Wakely, who was formerly based in Exeter, was convicted on charges of indecent assault and attempted sexual assault involving boys under the age of 16.

His criminal conduct came to light following an investigation that was initiated after one of the victims bravely came forward in 2013. The court heard evidence of Wakely’s abuse, which had remained undisclosed for many years, highlighting the long-lasting impact on the victims.

During the sentencing hearing, the judge emphasized the gravity of Wakely’s breaches of trust, noting his position as a vicar and the betrayal involved in his actions. The court also pointed out Wakely’s apparent lack of remorse for his crimes, which contributed to the severity of the sentence.

In addition to the prison term, the court imposed an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order on Wakely. This order is designed to restrict his activities and prevent any further harm, reflecting the seriousness with which the justice system views his offences.
