ROGER MCCOLM AND SHOCKING CHILD ABUSE IN PORTLAND
A man identified as Roger McColm has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of sexually abusing children in Portland.The crimes committed by McColm, who is now 82 years old, span over a decade, with allegations dating back to between 1969 and approximately 1980.
The case came to light after one of the victims courageously came forward in April 2019, prompting an official investigation by Dorset Police.
During the investigation, McColm, a resident of Southwell on Portland, denied all accusations made against him.
Despite his denials, the evidence presented in court was sufficient to convict him on multiple counts.
On June 13, McColm appeared before Bournemouth Crown Court, where he faced justice for his actions.
The court found him guilty of four counts of indecent assault, two counts of sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13, and one count of indecency with a child.
Following the conviction, McColm was sentenced to a lengthy term of 25 years imprisonment at Salisbury Crown Court on the Friday following his trial.
The sentence reflects the severity of his crimes and the impact they have had on his victims.
The victims, whose identities remain protected, have been described as 'exceptionally brave' for coming forward and sharing their experiences with law enforcement.
Detective Constable George Boast, a member of the Child Abuse Investigation Team, expressed his support and commendation for the victims’ courage.
He stated, “All three of the victims in this case have been exceptionally brave in coming forward and speaking to officers about the abuse they suffered.
“I am pleased that following an investigation, McColm was held accountable for his actions, which have had a long-lasting impact on the victims.
I hope this case shows that no matter when an incident occurred, we will always support victims and carry out detailed enquiries to ensure sexual offenders are brought to justice.”
