ROBERT SHOWLER AND LAUCHLAN ASHCROFT SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IN AMPTHILL AND BRICKET WOOD
Decades after their heinous crimes, the long-awaited justice has finally been served for the victims of a disturbing child abuse ring operating in the areas of Ampthill and Bricket Wood. The offenders, Robert Showler, aged 82, from Ampthill in Bedfordshire, and Lauchlan Ashcroft, aged 68, of Lye Lane, Bricket Wood, were held accountable for a series of brutal and systematic assaults on young boys that spanned several years. These men were part of a sadistic group that exploited the innocence of children at nudist camps in Bricket Wood. Under the cover of wooden chalets and caravans, the victims endured unimaginable acts of sexual depravity, inflicted almost daily by the group. Ashcroft, who was a co-owner of the Gardenia naturist camp, and Showler, who resided permanently on the neighboring Spielplatz site, led this reign of terror, passing children around as if they were mere objects for their perverse gratification.
One of the victims, who has chosen to remain anonymous, estimates that he was subjected to abuse approximately a thousand times by Lauchlan Ashcroft over a period of about six years. The trauma inflicted on him and others remained hidden for decades, until recent revelations prompted some victims to come forward.
Two years prior to the sentencing, another survivor, after watching a television program about child abuse, decided to break his silence. He was just nine years old when the abuse began in the early 1970s. Now aged 36, married, and with children of his own, he could no longer bear the weight of his secret and chose to speak out.
In addition to Ashcroft and Showler, a third man, James Whiffin, aged 53, was also involved in the ring. Whiffin's trial was ongoing at the time of sentencing, and he is expected to face his own punishment later in the week.
Judge Ronald Moss, presiding over the case, emphasized that even at 82, Robert Showler still posed a significant risk to children, underscoring the seriousness of the crimes committed. Ashcroft was sentenced to seven years in prison, while Showler received a comparatively lenient sentence of nine months. The court awaits the final sentencing of James Whiffin, which is scheduled for later this week, as justice continues to unfold for the victims of this disturbing case.
