ROBERT MERFYN WILLIAMS, MIDLANDS PHYSIOTHERAPIST, SENTENCED IN SHREWSBURY

A physiotherapist from the Midlands, Robert Merfyn Williams, has been sentenced to 15 months in prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a patient. The court case took place at Shrewsbury Crown Court, where Williams, age 66, maintained his innocence during the trial but was ultimately convicted by a jury after a two-day hearing held in December 2024.

The incident occurred when the patient visited Williams’ practice in Mardol, Shrewsbury, seeking treatment for a knee pain. Following the conviction, Williams was also mandated to register as a sex offender for a period of 10 years.

Detective Constable Nick Williams of West Mercia Police commended the victim for her bravery in coming forward, saying, "I commend the courage of the victim in this case to come forward and for her resilience and determination over the last couple of years as she waited for the trial to take place. I am pleased with the court result and sentencing and I hope the knowledge that police will take such allegations seriously and will do their best to bring offenders of sexual crimes to justice will give other victims the confidence to come forward."
