PORT GLASGOW MAN SENT THREAT MESSAGES TO EX-PARTNER
A DOMESTIC abuser from Port Glasgow made chilling threats to 'cut lumps' out of his ex's new partner, a court has heard.Robert Mathieson sent a series of threatening text messages and voice notes to his former partner earlier this year.
Despite his own lawyer revealing that Mathieson already has a conviction for domestic abuse against the same woman, the 31-year-old was handed a community-based sentence as a punishment - with a sheriff telling him that if he offends again, he'll have run out of chances.
Mathieson had been in a relationship with the woman for several years before separating in early 2025, Greenock Sheriff Court was told.
On May 11, Mathieson contacted the woman through Facebook Messenger and questioned her over her new relationship.
The court heard that the messages sent by Mathieson became threatening in their nature as he demanded to know the identity of her new partner.
He told the woman: “I’ll spend the next six months getting him and when I do, it’s over.
I’m serious.” In another message, Mathieson said: “I’m going to cut lumps out of him.” The woman also received voice recordings in which Mathieson could be heard talking about her new relationship.
She reported her ex's behaviour to police, and Mathieson was subsequently charged with a domestic abuse offence.
Mathieson pleaded guilty earlier this year to sending the woman messages of a grossly offensive or indecent, obscene or menacing character following an initial appearance in court on a police undertaking.
When Mathieson returned to court for sentencing, defence solicitor Amy Spencer revealed to Sheriff James Varney that he has a previous conviction relating to the same woman.
Ms Spencer added: “He’s absolutely mortified by his conduct.” Sheriff Varney told Mathieson: “You cannot continue to offend like this.
It’s your second domestic offence, and it’s a serious one.
Just because your relationship breaks down does not mean you can manage that person’s relationships with other people going forward.” Mathieson, of Berwick Road, was told to complete 80 hours of unpaid work within the next nine months.
He was also ordered not to approach or contact his former partner for a period of 15 months.
Sheriff Varney added: “If I see you her for a third domestic offence, you have really had all the chances you’re going to get.”
