ROBERT MANTON AND NATASHA BUTLER FROM CLACTON-ON-SEA SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOGS

In a disturbing case of animal cruelty, Robert Manton, also known as Rob Philpot, born in 1986, and Natasha Butler, born in November 1979, both residents of Stonham Avenue, Clacton-on-Sea CO16 7EH, have been found guilty of neglecting and physically abusing their two dogs. The case drew significant attention after the RSPCA uncovered evidence of their cruelty, leading to their conviction and subsequent bans from keeping animals for life.

The investigation was initiated after the RSPCA received distressing video footage depicting Manton and Butler abusing their dogs, a Staffy named Bruce and a Jack Russell-type called Snoop. The footage showed Manton kicking and hitting both animals, actions that prompted immediate concern and intervention. On January 13, 2023, the RSPCA, accompanied by police officers, visited the couple’s residence in Clacton-on-Sea and removed the dogs from their care. Since then, both Bruce and Snoop have been placed in the RSPCA’s care, where they have thrived and have now been successfully rehomed.

Further evidence revealed that the dogs were often seen fighting outside and running loose in the streets of Clacton-on-Sea. One particularly troubling aspect was the lack of intervention by Manton and Butler during these incidents, allowing the dogs to suffer and fight without any attempt to separate or control them. The dogs were kept together in conditions that were clearly unsuitable, with no measures taken to ensure their safety or well-being. Both animals suffered from skin diseases and were infested with fleas, indicating neglect and poor hygiene. The environment in which they were kept was contaminated with urine and feces, further highlighting the neglect.

Manton, who has a history of run-ins with Essex Police, was found guilty in his absence during the trial. Meanwhile, Butler pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including failing to meet the welfare needs of Snoop and Bruce. The charges encompassed neglecting their skin conditions, failing to control the dogs properly, keeping them in hazardous and unsanitary conditions, and not providing routine health care such as vaccinations and parasite control. Additionally, Butler was accused of failing to protect the dogs from stress, which was evidenced by her punching and kicking them, and exercising them on busy roads without proper restraint, putting their safety at risk.

During the court proceedings, it was revealed that both Manton and Butler were suffering from mental health issues at the time of the offences. Manton was also dealing with the recent loss of a relative to cancer. Although the dogs did not belong to Manton, he was aware of their poor conditions. Butler also cited her mental health struggles as part of her mitigation.

RSPCA inspector Emma Beynon expressed her disappointment, stating, “Bruce and Snoop should have been protected and kept safe, but sadly this was not the case. The couple failed them in so many ways. Both dogs were taken into RSPCA care and have since thrived and been rehomed. I would also like to thank the witnesses involved in this case — which was a difficult one for all parties.”

Regarding sentencing, Robert Manton received a 17-week prison sentence for the animal welfare offences, with an additional week added for his failure to surrender. His previous suspended sentence was activated, resulting in a further 40 weeks of imprisonment to run consecutively. Natasha Butler was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison, with extra time added for her failure to surrender. She was also ordered to complete 30 days of rehabilitation activities, pay costs of £600, and a victim surcharge of £154. Both individuals were disqualified from owning or keeping animals for life, marking a significant step in holding them accountable for their actions in Clacton-on-Sea.
