COUPLE BANNED FROM OWNING ANIMALS AFTER DOG LOST FUR
A HUSBAND and wife have been banned from owning animals after their dog nearly lost all its fur.
Crossbreed Teddy was found with bald and bleeding skin due to severe skin disease called sarcoptic mange, which had caused him to suffer for at least one month.
The couple, Robert Charlton, 56, and Melanie Charlton, 52, were sentenced at Kirklees Magistrates court on June 27 after pleading guilty to an Animal Welfare Act offence.
They have been disqualified from keeping animals for ten years.
Teddy was 'attempting to scratch and bite himself' and showed signs of severe discomfort.
Veterinary examination suggested he had suffered for at least four weeks.
The couple were fined £60 each, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £24 and costs of £200.
The court was told they had not known about the disease, mistaking it for fleas, and had not sought professional help.
Teddy recovered after treatment and was rehomed.
The RSPCA inspector stated: “We all have a responsibility to the animals we take on and that includes seeking timely and appropriate veterinary intervention.”
