MAN JAILED FOR STALKING AND HARASSMENT
On Thursday, 29 January, Robert Bassnett appeared at Liverpool Crown Court and received a prison sentence of four years and six months.Bassnett admitted to charges of stalking that caused significant alarm or distress, as well as harassment.
He was aged 35 and was held at HMP Altcourse at the time of the hearing.
The court was informed that Bassnett had an ongoing relationship with a 23-year-old woman, which lasted for approximately a year and ended in early 2024.
Despite the end of their relationship, he continued to contact the woman, who was pregnant during this period.
Between late April and mid-June 2025, Bassnett engaged in stalking activities, frequently visiting her home, demanding to see her, and sending her threatening texts alongside making unwanted phone calls.
On one occasion, he hid in a nearby bush, sent threatening messages, and waited for her to leave her residence.
After she exited, he shouted abuse at her, then emerged from the bush and threw a brick towards her.
He also made several death threats aimed at her father.
Bassnett’s threats extended onto social media, where he created a new account to post false information, including his address, and disturbingly, he harassed the victim’s father online.
The incidents were reported to Cheshire Police, who conducted investigations and issued appeals for information about his whereabouts, circulating a wanted notice.
During this time, Bassnett taunted officers on social media about his evasion.
He was quickly apprehended following these online provocations.
An extensive case was built against him, and he subsequently pleaded guilty to all charges.
In addition to his prison term, Bassnett was issued an indefinite Restraining Order, which prohibits him from contacting the victims through any means.
