BLACKPOOL BARMAN CAUGHT IN ONLINE CHILD SEX CHAT SCANDAL
Paedophile hunter groups exposed Richard Overton, a barman in Blackpool, after he sent explicit images and engaged in sexual conversations with someone he believed was a 15-year-old boy.
Overton started communicating on February 27, 2024, with the decoy 'TeenChavvyLad,' claiming the boy was shy and a virgin, and discussing sexual preferences.
Overton sent indecent images and attempted to persuade the decoy to do the same, with prosecutors revealing he used language such as 'sexy' and comments about the boy's school uniform.
He also talked about sexual activities he wanted to perform and claimed his phone was locked with a password to hide the content.
On May 5, 2024, police located Overton at his home after tracing his IP address, and he was confronted on his doorstep with video footage of his arrest shared online.
During court proceedings, Overton admitted to attempted sexual communication with a child, and his defense highlighted his remorse, noting he was 'extremely embarrassed and ashamed.' As a result, he lost his job and faced social shunning.
Judge Heather Lloyd sentenced him to eight months' imprisonment suspended for 18 months, handed him a 10-year sexual harm prevention order, and ordered him to undergo rehabilitation, sex offender treatment, and drug treatment, citing cannabis use as a potential factor in his offending.
The judge emphasized the rapid escalation of sexual conversation and deceit about his motives, stating that Overton lacked insight into the harm caused by such actions.
